Who we are
At Church on the Rock, we recognize that God has a specific plan and purpose for each person’s life. The broad scope and variety of ministries at Church on the Rock are simply a refection of our heart to help people of all economic, social and ethnic backgrounds in the Lubbock area and around the world. On this page, we have provided a little more information to give you a picture our history and who we are.
A BIT OF HISTORY
Pastor Jackie White has been in full time ministry for over 29 years. In August of 1984, while attending a Church Growth Conference in Seoul, South Korea, the Lord spoke a definite word about launching into a new direction to Pastor Jackie. In December 1985, Pastor Jackie began meeting with a group of about 35 people. In the following months, the group grew and officially took the name Church on the Rock in May 1986.
Growing…
The first home of COTR was a small warehouse facility located at Upland & 82nd. For 2 1/2 years, the warehouse facility was adequate, but as numbers grew to over 200, a larger space was needed. With the favor of God, details were worked out to make the Mall of America located at Loop 289 & 19th the second home of COTR. From 1988 to 1996, the mall property was an excellent facility. It was during the years at the mall that two very significant events occurred. The first was a merger with Abundant Life Church. Abundant Life became a part of COTR, adding over 80 people to the church family. Another piece of the merger was the Abundant Life property at Loop 289 & 34th street. After an exhaustive study and much prayer, the decision was made to trade that property for a 10 acre plot of land on Slide Road. This is where we are located today!
In 1995, construction began on our permanent building! The church moved to the property on Slide Road in February 1996. In February 2002, COTR opened the “Point,” a building used to minister to our children and
youth. We currently have a weekly attendance of 800-1,000 people and continue to grow! We are excited to have you along on our journey as we continue to seek God and make history!
Expanding…
Church on the Rock officially opened the doors to the Lubbock Dream Center on April 17, 2010. But long before that, the ground work of ministry was being put in place through our food ministry, beach club to elementary students, and adopt-a-block programs. The Dream Center is dedicated to those who are in desperate need of a dream and to those who have tasted the goodness of God and desire to pass it on.
We at Church on the Rock have a mandate from God to establish His Kingdom through compassion ministries that meet basic, natural needs in the lives of people in the Slaton-Bean neighborhood. As life’s needs are met, we believe hearts will be opened to the message and power of the Gospel and true transformation will take place.
WHAT WE BELIEVE
We believe the Bible, both old and new testaments, to be the Word of God and is relevant to our lives today. (2 Tim. 3:16). We believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. (Matt. 3:17) He came from the Father to earth, was born of a virgin, died on the cross, rose again, ascended back into heaven, and one day will return to this earth. Faith in His death and resurrection brings forgiveness of sin and new life in Christ. (John 3:16) We believe the Holy Spirit is God (Acts 5:3-4), as is the Father and the Son (Matt. 28:19). We believe He is sent from the Father by the Son to empower the church for service today, the same as he empowered the first church . (Acts 1:8) We believe He infills individuals who ask (Acts 2:38,39), so they can resist temptation and serve in the kingdom of God on earth. We believe that water baptism is an outward sign of inward happenings, and those who have been born again by accepting Jesus Christ as their personal savior should follow Him in baptism. We believe in God’s total healing power manifested through the prayer of faith for the body, mind, and spirit . (James 5:14,15)
